Elias Richard Williams

WILLIAMS, Elias Richard

Elias Richard Williams was born out of wedlock on the 25th of September 1893 in a Caernarvon workhouse to Jane Jones. She married Hugh Williams in 1895 and Elias was the eldest of their living seven children, one having died young. In 1901 the family were living in Llanfairpwllgwyngyll on the Menai Strait and Hugh gave his occupation as General Labourer. In 1911 the family were living in Baptist Street in Holyhead, though Hugh was not present. Elias, then aged seventeen, gave his occupation as Carter.

Elias enlisted with the Royal Welsh Fusiliers in July 1911 and was discharged in December 1913, having been absent from camp. In 1914 he married Lydia Pritchard in Holyhead and they had a daughter, Maggie Jane, in 1918. Lydia Williams died young in 1934. It is not known when Elias Williams began work with the City of Dublin Steam Packet Co. but he was on the 1918 Crew List as ‘Seaman’. He survived the sinking of RMS Leinster on the 10th of October.

He was recorded in the 1939 Register living in Summer Hill Terrace in Holyhead with his daughter Maggie Jane and her husband Emrys Williams . Elias gave his occupation as ‘Dock Porter LMS’. He died in Holyhead in 1940 aged forty-seven.
